[post_page_title]Harry Belafonte – 91 years old[/post_page_title]
We’ve finally come to the “King of Calypso,” Harry Belafonte. As his nickname hints, he began in music and then later moved to acting. His most enduring hint was The Banana Boat Song, which we all know as the “Day-o” song.
In his second career, he appeared in 1953 hit musical Carmen Jones and 1959 film noir Odds Against Tomorrow. Along with Sidney Poitier, he spearheaded the Civil Rights Movement, standing shoulder to shoulder with Martin Luther King Jr. He hasn’t put down the social mantle, either, as he’s still active in various causes. He even still acts, appearing in the latest Spike Lee movie currently in theaters.
