First coming into her own in the 1950s with film roles in romantic comedy Picnic, drama The Man with the Golden Arm, and musical Pal Joey, Novak continued churning out hits well into the 1960s, when she made the unprecedented decision to retire in 1966.
She made sporadic appearance in films over the course of the next three decades, but has been well and truly retired since 1991. However, the 85-year-old still makes public appearances at awards ceremonies and other public events, which she sometimes hosts.
