Mark Spitz was born in Russia and moved to Hawaii at the age of two. By age nine he began training at Arden Hills Swim Club in Sacramento. He was coached by Sherm Chavoor, a former Olympic medal winner.

He competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics as well as the 1972 Summer Olympics. Between the two he took home nine gold medals from freestyle, butterfly and medley swimming competitions. He retired from his swimming career at the age of 22 and was added to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977.
