Ian Thorpe is one of the most entertaining Olympian athletes the world has ever had the pleasure of watching. Ironically enough, this champion swimmer is allergic to chlorine! Thorpe is the most decorated Olympian athlete in Australia with five Olympic gold medals and is held in high regard by fellow swimmer, Michael Phelps.
In 2013, he sustained a shoulder injury which deterred his future plans to compete but was honored with a Doctor of Letters from Macquarie University for his sports philanthropy and work with indigenous rights. In 2014, Thorpe officially came out publicly; “I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man. And I don’t want people to feel the same way I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.”
