Nastia Liukin was born in Moscow, Russia and moved to the United States when she was two years old. Both of her parents were also champion gymnasts. Her father was a Olympian and her brother was a champion rhythmic gymnast.

She was the world champion of the balance beam in 2005 and 2007 and by 2008 she competed in the Summer Olympics in Beijing.  She won three silver medals, a bronze medal, as well as a gold medal. She retired in 2012 after she did not make the Olympic team.
