Viewers spend the whole movie getting attached to characters – or, at least, that’s what the creators are aiming for. Perhaps that’s the reason why fans of Alien were enraged when they went to see Alien 3.
The third installment killed off two main and important characters from the previous flicks, without giving it a second thought. They were casually mentioned as dead at the beginning, and there was no fuss about it at all. Zero consequences. Many people quit watching it, because that’s not how a franchise should treat its characters.
