La La Land tries to bring back the charm of old Hollywood to the screen in the form of a musical. Not everyone loves musicals, but even people who do felt that, in the first half of the film, the numbers were exaggerated and seemed to overshadow the actual plot.
Viewers who made it to the second half, found the main characters had depth, charm, and real conflicts. The rest went on to watching Moonlight, instead.
