Much the same way that the first moon landing in 1969 did not signal the beginning of the space race but its end, so too did Cousteau’s 1971 journey mark the end of any serious attempt to exhaustively map out the Great Blue Hole.
In the 47 years since, many divers wished to descend into its depths. Only skilled ones – with at least 24 dives to their names – were allowed to do so. Few made it deeper than 130 feet, which is less than a quarter of its actual depth.
