Modern-day Belize is a small Central American country. In fact, with about 388,000 residents, it has the smallest population of any Central American country. What it lacks in population size, however, Belize more than makes up for in history and natural beauty. For millennia, the Maya civilization thrived there, and building monumental settlements.
First contact with European explorers, however, eventually led to its downfall. Today, only ruins remain, but they’re enough to draw in countless tourists. Another big selling point is Belize’s untamed wilds, with its rich biodiversity and lush jungles. But where Belize truly shines is in the water. As one of the world’s top scuba diving locations, few places can compare. And none have the Great Blue Hole.
