[post_page_title]The first expedition[/post_page_title]
You might think a phenomenon as fascinating as the Great Blue Hole would attract scientists and explorers in droves, but you’d only be half right. While its allure was undeniable, for the longest time there wasn’t much anyone could do about it. The technology needed to reach its deepest, darkest depths simply did not exist. That all changed in 1971.

The first expedition

It was in that year that French oceanographer and pioneer in underwater exploration Jacques Cousteau, aboard his famed vessel Calypso, decided to get to the bottom of it – literally! As co-inventor of the world’s first scuba (“Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus”) gear, he was able to reach depths no one ever had before, and came back up with some stunning conclusions.
