The Great Blue Hole may not be Belize’s only natural wonder – it also boasts the second-longest barrier reef in the world – but it’s certainly the most impressive. A perennial part of pretty much everyone’s bucket list, the Great Blue Hole stands just 40 miles from the country’s coast. This sub-aquatic sinkhole is more than 1,000 feet across and reaches a depth of 407 feet.

It’s hard to grasp such abstract numbers, so allow us to put it into perspective for you. The Great Blue Hole is deep enough to fit not one but two Boeing 747 airliners inside of it, with some space actually left to spare. It has rightfully been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
