Finally, at the conclusion of the project’s 20 dives, Branson and his team did end up finding monsters in the Great Blue Hole. They weren’t sea serpents or giant squids, however. They were, as Branson himself said, climate change – and plastic.
As heartbreaking as it is to learn, it was true. When they reached the very bottom of the world’s largest hole, they found… plastic bottles. This, Branson stated, was the true scourge of the ocean. Manmade pollution had reached even that most desolate of places.
