So where does all that discarded plastic go? Some of it ends up in landfills, but that’s rarely its final destination. You may have already guessed, but allow us to put an exact number on it. More than eight million tons of plastic are dumped in our oceans every single year.
And it’s destroying ocean life. Vulnerable species, such as sea turtles and whales, are being choked by what they often mistake for food, but can’t actually digest. To date, plastic has been found as deep as three miles beneath the ocean’s surface.
