Cousteau’s findings rocked the scientific community, and have played a part in shaping not only how the Blue Hole was viewed, but also the entire planet’s ecosystem. Now agreed to have been created in at least four stages, the hole is made up of karst limestone caves.

Cousteau and his team were able to remove some stalactites from the intricate cave system found inside the hole, and they were faced with one inescapable conclusion – it was created on dry land. The hole’s distinctive rock formations simply could not have formed underwater. The theory was that melting icebergs led sea levels to rise, which in turn flooded the caves and eventually created the sinkhole we know today.
