If viewers took anything away from the special – or the expedition in general – Branson hoped it would be what a danger plastic poses to our planet. Though naturally-occurring plastics have been in used for millennia, the first patent on artificially-made plastic was registered in 1856.
Later, in the 1940s, factories around the world began churning out plastic products on a global scale. Today, 300 million metric tons of plastic are created each and every day. Does recycling offset the problematic nature of this non-biodegradable material? The answer, sadly, is no.
