At the opening of the movie, Thanos and his children have taken over the Asgardian ship and destroyed it, while Thor and Loki were left powerless against them.
The Hulk shows up at some point, but fans were asking themselves why he didn’t appear sooner and possibly prevent some of the devastation? Well, the reason for that is solely filmmaking related. The writers wanted to create a dramatic effect for the viewers, and “announce Thanos as the biggest villain in the MCU,” by having him defeat the Hulk relatively easily.
