When we think of the pyramids today, we typically think of old, dusty, blocky structures in the middle of sandy expanses. But that is not how they were for the first thousand or so years after they were built.
The pyramids actually had a white, polished layer of limestone covering them. This made them actually really hard to look at during the day due to how brightly they reflected sunlight (and even moonlight). But the coup de grace on top of the pyramids? A giant, gold capstone.
