Hosting the 1995 Academy Awards was supposed to be a big deal for David Letterman. It was the talk show host’s first time fronting the ceremony, and it got off to a pretty terrible start. He decided to call out Uma Thurman and Oprah Winfrey for having unusual names, figuring people would find it funny.
He introduced them to one another, then asked if they knew Keanu Reeves, a joke that didn’t exactly land. It’s no wonder that Letterman and Winfrey spent years not getting along with one another.
