Rumspringa basically means, to run around. When an Amish youth turns 18, they are allowed to leave the community for a certain amount of time to see the life outside, it can be as little as a few days, and as long as a couple of years – depending on the person.

The reason behind this is so the youth willingly chooses to come back to the community after seeing what the outside world has to offer. Most times the youths do indeed return to their community.
