Hordley grew up in Lancashire and in 1977 he went on to earn his B.A in Theatre Arts from Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre.
His big break came when he was cast as the bad-boy, Cain Dingle, on the popular soap opera. He first appeared on the show in 2000 for a couple of episodes and in 2001 he became a regular.

When Hordley decided to leave the show in 2006, his character was written out, however he returned three years later.
His role as a villain helped him land future roles as a similar typecast, for example he was part of the 2006 production of Mother Goose that was taking place at the Churchill Theatre in London.
