During the time that Karen was struggling with Anorexia, the disease was only starting to be understood. The general public was unaware that it was even a psychological disease.
Nowadays, the disease is much more understood and although many people still suffer from it, there are many more options for treatment. While Karen was still alive, a friend gave an article about anorexia from Reader’s Digest to Karen’s mother. There is no confirmation, however, that she even read the article or gave it to Karen.
