Tom Petty later released that during his time in the band he had too, in fact, had to battle through a heroin addiction. Having been worried about the message it could send out to the younger generation, it was the band’s former drummer that would convince him to go public with the announcement. Petty reported it was due to emotions he struggled to deal with, but he thought it should never be an option for anyone to take in the first place.
