When the Titanic disaster struck, RMS Carpathia was sailing from New York City to Rijeka. After hearing the distress signal, they pressed on full steam ahead to try and rescue the passengers.
Both the heating and hot water on the ship was cut off, to provide more steam for the engines that would enable them to go faster. The crew managed to rescue 712 people from the freezing water, and these were just some of the survivors.
