Renowned author Kurt Vonnegut is well known for being a soldier prior to his time as a writer because of his writing about his military experience. Vonnegut was deployed to fight in Europe during World War II but was captured by German forces during the Battle of the Bulge.

It was his time as a POW that was the inspiration for his novel Slaughterhouse Five. When the allies were bombing Germany, and the camp he was in in Dresden, he hid in a meat locker inside a slaughterhouse.
