No one was sure as to who would act in The Andy Griffith Show or even whether or not the show would take off. That is the reason why when Don Knotts appeared in the pilot episode without having been given a contract to sign. Actually, Knotts’s character Barney Fife was not even supposed to last throughout the whole series, but the directors and producers loved the way Don played the character so much that he became an integral part of the show.
