Melissa McCarthy is one of the most famous comedic actresses in the business, but many people forget that she really got her start as a fairly minor character in Gilmore Girls. Yes, Melissa became Sookie St. James – but not in the unaired pilot.
The showrunners originally chose Alex Borstein to be their titular chef, and she even filmed the unaired pilot as the character. However, the actress’s contract with MadTV meant that she couldn’t continue filming the popular television series, so Melissa was given the part instead.
