It was pretty much every teenager’s dream. When Princess Leia was in captivity in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, she wore a golden bikini that was seared into the nation’s memory and became iconic.
But not everyone was a fan – many people thought it was demeaning to the only substantial female character the franchise had at the time. It was actually based on artwork by Frank Frazetta for the cover of the A Princess of Mars book. George Lucas loved it, and decided to use the bikini as “something special” for that scene.
