During her childhood, life in Ukraine was difficult for everyone. The country had only recently achieved its independence, and the economy was in no fit state to cater for its people. Employment was at record highs, and few people had money to survive. Although Varya and her family were traveling around Ukraine with their circus troupe, they weren’t making enough money to live comfortably. Because of this, the family had to make a tough decision. They had to move out of their apartment and move into their local gymnasium.
