[post_page_title]Chicago used to be one-foot lower[/post_page_title]
Before the 1800s, the city of Chicago actually sat lower into the ground than it does now. However, the mud problems that occurred during the middle of the century were leading to outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever which were all having fatal effects.
To fix the issue, the sewerage board commissioned storm sewers that saw the whole city raised by at least one foot, while other areas were raised by up to 14 feet. It took over 20 years, but they didn’t disrupt daily life throughout any of the process.
