Learning about Hanna’s story touched the hearts of thousands of people… but local authorities in Daytona Beach were less than impressed. Ocean Rescue Captain Tammy Malphurs spoke to the media later and related the day’s events from their perspective.

When she concluded, she noted that while they believed Hanna’s “heart was in the right place,” they never encourage people to try and rescue people drowning themselves. Instead, Malphurs advised to just call 9-1-1, and leave the heroism to the professionals.
