It later turned out that Hanna’s own mom, Heather, was very close to the action without initially realizing it. As she lives right by the beach, she was drawn there by the sound of sirens, not realizing they were partly for her daughter.
She texted Hanna to ask what happened, but received no reply. Then, a co-worker called her to break the news, and she broke off running. In spite of her daughter’s injuries, she couldn’t have been prouder. When Hanna asked her not to be mad, she replied, “Hanna, you tried to save someone.”
