The former Communist dictatorship Albania was left in disarray towards the end of the 20th century, so in 1999 the Special Operations Battalion, or BOS, was formed to combat encroaching threats in the region. The BOS have collaborated closely on the area of military intelligence with the United States and will continue to do so as Russia looks increasingly hungry for the Balkans.
