Short for Grupo Especial de Operaciones, or Special Operations Group in English, this is Spain’s answer to the calls for a well-trained counter-terrorism unit. They specialize in aircraft hijackings, incoming threats from the ocean, and hostage situations. Thankfully they aren’t required for these kinds of tasks very often and are mainly used for the protection of visiting foreign Heads of State.
