National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, or GIGN, are France’s Special Forces Unit, with a specialism in counter-terrorism and hostage situations. The massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics is largely what spurred France, and many European countries, to put together a unit capable of handling high-risk situations that ordinary Police are not trained or prepared for.
