Like many other actors who portray romantic couples on-screen, Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds were plagued with rumors as filming came to an end. Many suspected that they had taken their on-screen chemistry off the screen and embroiled themselves in a secretive affair. Nevertheless, Dolly was quick to squash these rumors and noted that they were just friends and nothing more. She noted that if Burt were ever to get married, she would “want to be friends with his wife” without them wondering if they were once an item.
