As the movie director, Colin Higgins watched this musical gain traction; he decided to transform it into a movie that could be watched over and over again by fans at home. For this movie, he enlisted the help of Dolly Parton to take on the role of Mona Stangley. He also asked Burt Reynolds to come on board so that he could play Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd.
