Known today for the degenerative disease which took his life, Lou Gehrig was an multiple All Star and Triple Crown winner for the New York Yankees in the 1920’s and 1930’s. With a .344 batting average along with an RBI of 1,995, the Iron Horse – as Gehrig was affectionately nicknamed – was inducted into the Baseball hall of fame in 1939, the year he retired. His baseball card from six years before his retirement recently sold at auction for over a quarter of a million dollars, and is only expected to increase in value.
