When you think about it, cell phone numbers are pretty strange. You punch a random selection of digits that barely make any sense into your contact list, and before too long you’re able to connect with the person who has that number, no matter where they are in the world.
There’s a high chance that you have, because people are constantly getting new phones, they are constantly changing their numbers, and some numbers are even recycled! In fact, there could be another person somewhere in the world right now who has the exact same number as you. That’s probably why our crush isn’t texting us back, right? Must be the case. Most of the time, these “Soz, wrong number” messages are the end of a conversation. However, when this husband texted the wrong woman instead of his wife, he never expected he’d end up marrying her…
An incredible story
Do you know your cell phone number off by heart? The answer is probably yes. Do you have your mom’s cell phone number at the tip of your tongue? Again, you might be able to scrape by. Do you have your partner’s cell phone number emblazoned onto your brain? Well, some people might, and others just might not be able to remember all of those numbers.
This is normally not a problem, because our cell phones have the ability to store these numbers for us. All you have to do is make your way to your contacts list, choose the person you want to speak to, and give them a text. It sounds simple, right? It normally is, but this incredible story shows us what happens when this goes wrong.
A struggling marriage
To truly understand this story, we need to learn a little more about the husband in question. This story revolves around a husband and wife by the name of Peter and Mary McTaggart. Peter McTaggart used to work as a security guard in Lancashire, England, and he was also married to his first wife for many years.
He lived a normal, everyday existence in their marital home, although they were having a few problems with their relationship. However, their marriage came crumbling down when he texted someone he thought was his other half. Although he soon realized that he wasn’t talking to his wife, Peter soon found himself falling for the woman on the other end of the telephone.
One single digit
The now-46-year-old first began texting his second wife, 60-year-old Mary McTaggart, in the early ‘00s. He had just bought a new phone and was in the process of transferring all of the numbers from his old phone to his new one. As he did this, he incorrectly typed in the cell phone number of his wife at the time.
He thought that he had transferred the number perfectly, but he had instead changed one single digit. This meant that he had not saved his wife’s number, but had instead saved the number of a woman called Mary, who lived in Newcastle, England. At the time, he had no idea what he had done, and started texting his “wife” as he normally would…
Talking to his wife
Because Peter worked different shifts to his former wife, he would message her throughout the late evening and early morning. This was the way that they communicated normally, and he was a little confused when he received no response. Was she mad at him? Was something wrong with his phone? What he didn’t realize was that he was actually texting another woman.
Mary knew that she was receiving texts from a wrong number, but she didn’t know what to do. To begin with, she just ignored the messages. She hoped that by not replying, the sender would get the message and realize what they had done. However, the messages just kept coming, and she conceded that she would have to reply.
The wrong number
After Peter sent Mary a few messages, Mary eventually had to put him out of his misery. She confessed that he had got the wrong number and that he was not talking to his wife as he first thought. She was instead a supermarket worker from Newcastle who didn’t know who he was and didn’t know who his wife was.
She was a complete stranger, but she understood that it’s often easy to send messages to the wrong number. Peter was extremely apologetic, and these apologies soon made way for longer and lengthier text exchanges between the two of them. Because Peter was going through marital problems with his wife, he decided to keep these conversations away from her prying eyes.
Talking back and forth
Before too long, Mary and Peter were talking on a regular basis. They were talking about their lives, and they were talking about their hopes and dreams. However, their conversation soon took a turn.
Neither of them could avoid the fact that they were both in unhappy marriages, and they soon used these similar scenarios to bond even more. They were both struggling, and they were both a shoulder to cry on when things got tough. Every day, they were realizing that they had more and more in common.
The same humor
As well as being there for each other when their marriages became too much to bear, Peter and Mary discovered that they had the same sense of humor. They would send each other jokes, they would laugh at the same stories, and they had a deep connection that couldn’t be ignored.
However, this was more of a friendship connection than anything romantic. They were both married, and they both wanted to make these marriages work, no matter how difficult they had become. They were going to pull through with each other’s help.
Uncovering the secret
Although Mary had told her husband about her friendship with Peter, Peter had not told his wife about Mary. He was keeping the whole thing a secret, but it seems as though this came back to bite him. As his wife grew suspicious about who he was talking to on such a regular basis, she began to do her research.
She eventually uncovered the secret and learned that he was talking to Mary on a sometimes hourly basis. She became jealous, and she asked Peter to stop. Instead of doing that, though, he continued to talk to the other woman.
Staying with them
As Peter and his first wife’s marriage became even more strained, their troubles soon erupted into a blazing row. Peter knew that he couldn’t stay in the house, and Mary’s husband eventually suggested that he make his way up to Newcastle to stay with them.
So, that’s what he did. The cell phone friends met for the first time with Mary’s husband present, and Peter used the few days to sort out his head and think about his life and his marriage. A few weeks after returning home, Peter left his wife.
In March 2004, Peter moved out of the house he shared with his ex-wife and went to stay with a friend to start with. However, when he heard that Mary had left her husband in July, he decided to move up to Newcastle and start a new life where he could be near to her.
However, they both still maintained that they were only friends and that there was no chance of romance between them. They had been brought together by fate to help each other, but that was it.
A trip away
For the next year, both Mary and Peter lived their separate lives, while still maintaining their friendship. They helped each other through their divorce battles, and they continued to be shoulders to cry on when times got tough.
Yet, they were living in separate houses, and they even had their own groups of friends. However, after a particularly trying few months, Mary and Peter decided that they needed a break away. They booked a trip to Blackpool, and they enjoyed the trip away from their home lives.
Making a decision
After an incredible trip away, Peter and Mary couldn’t deny that there was something more than friendship between them. They knew everything about each other, they had the same sense of humor, and they even had undeniable chemistry.
So, it was time to give a romantic relationship a go. Although they were concerned about the age difference between the pair of them, they eventually decided that age meant nothing if the love was there. They had faith in their relationship, and they hoped it would work out.
A better place
More than anything, Peter and Mary knew that they trusted each other with their lives. While they had initially met through a screen, meeting in person was one of the best things to ever happen to them.
They had become better people, they had escaped failing marriages, and they were now on the path to success. While they were putting their friendship on the line, they had a good feeling about their relationship. In fact, this good feeling was warranted, because the couple is still together today!
Tying the knot
After a whopping 13 years together, Peter and Mary finally tied the knot in 2017. Because they knew that their love was solid, and because they knew that they had both already been married, they decided to keep their wedding as low-key as possible.
They invited only a few of their closest family and friends, and they even recycled elements of their first weddings into their big day. Mary wore the same wedding dress, and Peter even wore the same kilt. They didn’t need anything fancy to show their love to each other.
Doing it themselves
Amazingly, Peter and Mary did most of the planning around their wedding themselves. Mary decided to ditch a florist and create her own wedding bouquet, and she even used leftover flowers to create buttonholes for Peter and the groomsmen.
Alongside this, Mary also made their wedding cake to cut costs and extra hassle. They later danced for the first time as a married couple to a song they hold dear to their hearts, Daniel Bedingfield’s “I Will Never Leave Your Side.” It was the perfect day for both of them.
Can’t believe it
Now, Peter and Mary are happier than ever. They are both confident about their marriage, and it seems as though their love does not go unnoticed. However, many people can’t believe their story.
During an interview with the Mirror newspaper, Mary noted that one of the women she worked with couldn’t believe that they had met in such a way. She initially didn’t believe Mary’s story and was shocked when Peter confirmed that it had really happened that way. After all, love works in mysterious ways.
There’s no doubt about the fact that this story is one for the ages. Both Mary and Peter were in unhappy marriages when he just happened to text the wrong number, and 13 years later they were out of their marriages and saying “I do” to each other.
The couple has confessed that they believe fate brought them together because they can’t think of any other reason why those chain of events would happen to them. They now hope that they will be together forever.
