Although Mary had told her husband about her friendship with Peter, Peter had not told his wife about Mary. He was keeping the whole thing a secret, but it seems as though this came back to bite him. As his wife grew suspicious about who he was talking to on such a regular basis, she began to do her research.
She eventually uncovered the secret and learned that he was talking to Mary on a sometimes hourly basis. She became jealous, and she asked Peter to stop. Instead of doing that, though, he continued to talk to the other woman.
