In March 2004, Peter moved out of the house he shared with his ex-wife and went to stay with a friend to start with. However, when he heard that Mary had left her husband in July, he decided to move up to Newcastle and start a new life where he could be near to her.
However, they both still maintained that they were only friends and that there was no chance of romance between them. They had been brought together by fate to help each other, but that was it.
