When Peter Berg was commissioned to adapt his film Friday Night Lights into a TV series, he originally wanted country singer Dwight Yoakam to play Coach Taylor. Berg said it was impossible to offer him the role after the musician made too many demands. He had requested too many days off and he demanded more money than the show’s budget. They offered the role to Kyle Chandler although Berg was reluctant to hire someone “too pretty” to play the coach.
