Before Game of Thrones became – well – Game of Thrones, it was an entirely different show. It deviated from the source material and the unaired pilot featured a completely different cast. The original pilot was canned by HBO and production was forced to shift directions. That included the recasting of Tamzin Merchant as Daenerys “Khaleesi” Targaryen, despite George R.R. Martin’s praise of her performance. Emilia Clarke was brought in to play the Mother of Dragons after producers loved her audition.
