Karen is a survivor of the Apocalypse, before the outbreak hit is was a teacher that lived near Woodbury. Karen is a friend of Rick’s, the protagonist of the show. Once in the prison she starts to display signs of the unknown disease and is therefore separated from the healthy people. She is later found dead.
It turns out that she was stabbed in the head and they dragged to the courtyard by Carol. Carol confessed to Rick that she killed Karen out of fear of the infection spreading.
