One of the main reasons why Tessa Thompson has been so strong about her views on identity is that she has come from a mixed heritage. On her father’s side, Tessa has inherited black Panamanian roots, and on her mother’s side inherited Mexican and European roots. Because of this, she does not feel as though she can be categorized into one particular race or ethnicity. She is just Tessa Thompson, and she loves to play characters that are also on their own in terms of their identity.
