Meryl auditioned for the female lead in King Kong remake in 1976. Upon arriving at the audition, producer Dino De Laurentiis turned to his son and spoke to him in Italian, saying that Meryl was too unfortunate looking for the role. Meryl then embarrassed the producer by replying to his remark in fluent Italian, “I’m very sorry that I’m not as beautiful as I should be but, you know—this is it. This is what you get.”
