Maybe the government was actually worried about something else. Maybe they aren’t aware of what will happen, but their goal is to keep people calm. In their eyes, they don’t want this man’s popularity to rise, because if it does – he may end up convincing people that doomsday is indeed approaching us.
Country leaders don’t want their citizens to be worried – they want them to be cool, calm, and collected – so we see why they might have an interest in hushing him up.
