Despite their attempts to maintain this facade for the public and keep the show going, the couple would eventually split. In 1974, Sonny filed for separation, followed very quickly after by Cher’s filing for divorce.
The two were both devastated by the divorce, while also being furious at the other. However, Cher was finally getting what she had wanted for so long. Although it took a little time, she was able to free herself from her contract with Sonny after the divorce, and for the first time she had control over her own career.
