The night of the sinking, the water was a -2 degrees Celsius, a mere 28 degrees Fahrenheit. For any individual who was in the water, it would have taken no more than 15 minutes for them to freeze to death. Most would have died within two minutes of hitting the water from the shock the cold had on their bodies. Those who were in the lifeboats made no attempt to go get those in the water for fear of being overrun by people and hurting the chances of survival for everyone on the boat.
