John Jacob Astor IV was on board the ship. He was an American businessman who was part of the Astor family and worth $85 million at the time – which today would be around $2 billion. He was said to be the richest man aboard the Titanic. Astor died on the ship as it sank into the frigid North Atlantic Ocean after it was hit by the iceberg.
