As one could imagine, Chamberlain and Mead were stunned when they opened the fuel tank. When they called an operator to report the treasure, they said, “We’ve found umpteen bars of gold bullion in an Iraqi tank.”
There was a lot of speculation around the gold and some believed that it could have been placed in the tank during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990. Iraq was ordered by the UN to return any items that were stolen but many were hidden and not returned.
